Shaky,
I’m not an expert, but big Alabama gets fresh water a few ways. If there is a real, real big rain it gets water from the rain of course, but it is also part of the water shed for that part of Pointe Coupee parish that lies within the Morganza spillway. A second way, and I think the most substantial way big Alabama gets fresh water is when we get our yearly river rises and the Atchafalaya River backs-up into it.
So…, I believe one answer to your question is to check any of the river gauge levels of the Atchafalaya River from Simsport on down south; if the readings are low you can assume the water level in big Alabama is low.
This is just my impression…again, I’m not an expert so don’t bet the farm on my explanation!
