Yamaha motor question?
Took boat out yesterday and it started up just fine.moved around and started it 3 r 4 times with no problem.when I got ready to leave all the motor did was make a clicking sound.sounds like the noise is coming from the starter, both wires going to the starter are very hot when trying to start the motor.i tapped the starter with a hammer and it tried to turn over.i guess what I am asking is do I need another starter r is something else going on.

You could try to take the battery cables off the battery and clean the battery post real good with a wire brush, clean the cable ends real good also.
Could be you are not getting the full voltage to the battery. Also make sure the cable is tight on the starter
Check the voltage in the battery, maybe charge it up. You might check the water/acid level in the battery, if low only add distilled water and not tap water.
I'm not saying that is the problem, but is real easy process to try and could prove to be a cheap fix.

I don't know how old your motor/battery are but marine service is really hard on everything. I'd start by cleaning and tightening cable connections at battery AND starter. (Disconnect battery before messing with started unless you like electrocution). Also check no-load voltage on battery and then check again under load to test battery. If all that's good, I'd look at the cables themselves (they do corrode and break down) and then the starter and solenoid. Marine electrical is tough!

Check first after you determine battery and connections are good, the gear on end of starter is not engaged with the flywheel. If it is disconnect battery, use a screwdriver to get it disengaged. Spray the starter shaft with WD40 or some lubricant like that then screw the gear up and down a couple of times by hand. If that is not the case, and your motor is free I would say your starter is bad. Most can be rebuilt cheaper than new. The reason for checking that gear is those motors have no torque. The build the power to turn your motor by coming up to full speed before the drive gear engages the flywheel. Also low battery voltage sometimes will cause it to hang up.
