Please allow me to pay my 2 cents worth on this subject. I spider-rig exclusively. I have learned this method and became obsessed with it. In summer when its HOT!!! I have the best luck trolling very slowly and following the river channel ledges in water ranging from 16 to 30 feet. I use live minners also because that's what I like. Start early in the 16 foot range and as the sun rises adjust your bait deeper. It works great for me most of the time. Except for the days you just cant buy a bite anywhere, We've all had those days. Good luck from superfly.

Summer is crazy because you can catch fish from the bottom to the top. Some shad will school up on top and some stay near the bottom where its cooler. Notice that you see bass schooling up in the dead heat of the summer chasing the shad, but you can also catch bass deep as well. Once the sun comes out, the algae and phytoplankton in the water starts photosynthesizing and oxygen is produced, the more sunlight = the more oxygen, the more oxygen = the more happy the fishies. Sunlight can only penetrate so deep, so the upper water column nearest the surface has the most oxygen being produced (fish will be there following the shad that are eating the plankton) BUT, cooler water can hold more dissolved oxygen, so deeper down the water is not only cooler but also contains enough oxygen (not if there is a thermcline though) to keep the fishies happy.
