Default Sad Day!!! Hung up the crappie poles!!

Well, today was a sad day. I hung up all the crappie poles for the season and emptied the crappie gear from the boat. Now it is time to switch to bass and the occational night crappie trip. I had a great spring and it sounds like most of you did also. I always promise myself I will hit the crappie again in the fall but the deer call me to much at that time of the year. Hopefully I will stick to my promise and try some fall crappie but the big buck is pretty hard to refuse. I enjoyed talking to you guys all spring and hate the fact that I won't be watching this site everyday, like I do during the spring. Have a good summer everyone and be safe on the water.

Jigboy, I can sympathize with you. I've done the same thing for years, mostly because after the spawn I just wasn't any good at finding them. When I started deer and turkey hunting I read everything I could get my hands on, watched videos and did everything I could do to become better. I managed some good success, and still enjoy doing it. Now I'm consumed with a fish! I'm doing the same thing with Crappie. Reading everything and just trying to get better. Just like hunting, you got to be in the right spot to do any good. I'm gonna keep pressing on till it either get's to hot, or I get stumped again.....and then will try to get my deer early with a bow so I can devote October and November back to that Fish again.

I've improved a lot already with the fishing just by understanding them and fishing where they are not where they ain't. Even though I've caught a lot more fish than I ever have before, I've still been eluded by one over 2lbs. It's a personal goal of mine. I'm not obsessed with getting a limit every time out....a few good fish is just fine. But my goal is to break two lbs. I hope my persistence pays off.

Good luck deer hunting and keep in touch with us. Take care

You can still get some decent Crappie fishing in, at Taylorsville Lake ... you just have to be on the water by O dark 30, and off by noon. Hit the shaded bank blowdowns & stands of trees.
You might also look into the Taylorsville area, for your deer ... they're thick around there.
And, be sure and save some time to hit Watts Bar for crappie ... along about mid Oct thru mid Nov.
Where ya planning on doin your bassin Most of my "summer bassin" is usually done on Taylorsville or Herrington, what little there is of it :D
You don't have to check in every day ... but, your input and info (experience) is still needed & appreciated.

Looks like we missed our window of opportunity, for Green River Lake. But, I appreciate the invite, all the same. Hold a raincheck for me, for next Spring ... maybe the weather & work schedules will allow us a better opportunity, then.

If you're looking to break the 2lb mark ... I suggest Barkley, in the Spring (late April) dunkin minnow/float in the buckbushes -- or perhaps an excursion to Watts Bar (late Apr to mid May, depending on water temps .. and more normal weather patterns). :D

And, just in case you didn't know .... Green River Lake has Walleye -- I know, cause I've caught 'em there :D .... OK, so I WAS Crappie fishing, casting a 1/16oz chartreuse marabou Roadrunner, but ... :p

I do most of my bass fishing at Taylorsville now that gas has jumped so high again. I have an annual smallmouth trip to Pelee Island, Ontario (Canadian waters of Lake Erie). We hammer the smallmouth up there and it is only a 6 hour drive and well worth the trip.

I might take you up on still looking for some crappie on Taylorsville. I am actually headed down this Sunday to bass fish but might start out with the crappie for the first few hours. I do enjoy night fishing for crappie. There isn't anything more relaxing. The kids and I have actually taken a portable tv and sat up and watched movies and caught crappie all night long.

As far as the 2lb crappie goes, I here ya. I read on here all the time about people catching two pounders but to be honest, I question their scales a lot of the times because I know there are a lot out there but by some pictures I have seen, they look a little short to me. I did not catch a 2 pounder this year. I had a few that were real close but short by an ounce or two. The best I ever did was on Neelly Henry (note sure how to spell it) down in Alabama about four years ago. The guide from JR's place named Mark Collins told me the were only do fair on Weiss Lake and we were going to drive over to this other lake because he had put 8 two pounders in the boat the day before. I figured he was full of it but said lets go. My very first crappie was 2 1/2 lbs. My dad landed one shortly after that was over 2 lbs also. During the day, we let my son, who was 8 years old at the time pull in three others that were all over 2 pounds. So I am not bragging as much as I am telling you, you never know when they will be there. I have never caught a true 2 pounders since or before that trip. I have all of them mounted together on a brushpile hanging on my wall at home. The actual biggest I caught this year was one ounce shy and I caught it at Taylorsville. Now I want the three pounder and continue to head to Alabama each year just for that three pounder. Good luck on your search.

Jigboy, I'm like you, I've been real close several times but always keep missing it by an ounce or two. I know eventually It will happen though just have to put in the time. I'm sure after I get one over two, I'll have fun the rest of my life trying for one over 3lb.

CrappiePappy, We'll definately try to work it out for next spring on Green. Hopefully work schedules and the weather will cooperate for us.

    Default Jigboy....

I can understand your indecision, I have the same feelings with the changing of the seasons. Crappie fishing, Bass fishing and deer hunting all have their place and time, and I love all of it. We just have to make the time for it. Makes for a good time outdoors. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!

    Hey LaBill,

Do you make all the designs at the end of your post or where do you find them on the web? I'm a vet from 66-69 and would like to use some icons. "Thanks" in advance.

    Talking Sad Days Indeed.........Until?

Quote from Jigboy: Well, today was a sad day. I hung up all the crappie poles for the season and emptied the crappie gear from the boat.

It was a sad day indeed for me too, Jigboy. I've read and heard of crappie fishermen who can catch them year round and I am determined to figure it out before I die. For now I am enjoying the gill fishing because I did not do worth a hoot with crappie this spring and the next best thing to a skillet full of crappie filets is a skillet full of bluegill:D . I am new to this board but I've been reading everyone's posts since early March and I hope to learn from you all so I can devote more of my year to the pursuit of crappie catchin'. I have been ruined by a few years I spent in Alabama in the eighties, catching 2-3 lb. crappie in the spring. I've got to at least figure out Ky. crappie fishing so I can have some to eat occasionally. I am curious about night fishing for crappie, how many batteries do you need and what kind of spot should you look for to set up in? I would consider trying this at Taylorsville sometime in June maybe.

Minnerdipper, welcome to the site. Go to the search field and look up a nightfishing for Crappie article by Rango. It's a good read. I myself am trying to figure out how to make Crappie fishing productive enough to pursue all year.

You'll get a lot of good information to try here. Good luck!
