Verify that the #'s on the hull match exactly the state's paperwork. A single digit off or something swapped around ????? did the state just upgrade their computer system or switch to a new system ????

I just got back from renewing the registrations on both of my boats. All was well with my 10' Jon but I was told by the clerk that my HIN on my Monark was invalid. I had to sign a request for a new valid HIN, which when the Commonwealth sends it and collects $6 more I will have to "afix" to my boat. Well according to the paperwork they gave me the HIN on the boat is a valid length (12 digits) and in the correct format, and in the proper place on the starboard side of the transom.
Has anyone else run into this and what if anything did you do to "correct" it?

GO BIG ORANGE !
I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
I have to do my old jon boat too. I figured it was because it's 47 yrs old.
My '64 jon does not have or need a HIN, as only boats manufactured after 1971 are required to have a HIN.

I did not know that. Mines probably older than 47, theres some kind of old state police sticker on it from 69. My registration says yr unknown. This will probably be a pain for me.
I think that you will be OK as my '64 jon sailed right through since it is pre 1971.

I just got this notice in the mail also. I bought my boat new last year. I'm going to go talk to them about it today after work.
Who are you going to talk to? The clerk in my County Clerk's office only knew to have me sign the Request for a State Issued HIN. I think I may have figured mine out. One section of the HIN is supposed to be the Model Number of the hull. Mine is a "C" and 4 numbers while the model of my boat is a 1664V. So it appears that Monark did not follow the format of the the Federal Agency (which one?) that dictates how the HIN is supposed to be.
Good luck and let me know how you make out.

The link below explains a bit better (a lot of detail) on what is going on with the HINs.

I went to the clerks office and the renewal that I had was blank becuase they didn't have a value of my boat. But at the bottom it states you will not be able to renew without a valid hin so I thought that's why it was blank
