What am I missing?
My home lake is Barren River Lake which holds a good deal of better than average size crappie and enough dinks to keep its future bright. So why is it that I can't seem to do very well pulling crank baits, best day so far has been 3. I parallel points, humps, pull across them. I change color, depths speed, doesn't seem to mater. As creel clerk I interview people who say they do well pulling cranks but as of yet, I haven't seen the first boat in action. (do fishermen lie)I can go to another lake, Malone, and catch 20-25 a day, but the fish that come from there are pretty thin and on the short side. Am I doing something wrong? I troll with 2, 14' rods, one out each side, 2 out the front, each has a 3oz weight for depth adjustment, and 2 out the rear of the boat. Is it the lake? Winter draw down pulls the lake about 25'. There are areas with a depth of 70', and the thermocline has set in for the summer at about 20'. Just thought I'd throw it out on the table and see if I'm missing something.

According to this : Louisville District > Missions > Civil Works > Water Information > Updated Lake Temperatures and Dissolved Oxygen Lev > Barren Profile
... the greatest O2 drop occurs from 12ft to 14ft deep, and any depth below 14ft is a dead zone. The biggest temp drop occurs from 10-14ft ( a 5deg F. drop from 78 to 73deg F.)
Now, these reading ARE taken at the dam, so depths and readings may differ in other areas of the lake.

Pay attention to your electronics and let it tell you where the bait is. The crappie will be where the bait is, whether it be on top of the drops in shallow water, suspended shallow over deep water, wherever. Lots of folks miss the best summer has to offer by thinking deep,deeper,and deepest.

Try that drop in Peter creek. I caught crappie on cranks on it. Just go back and forth on it. Sometimes they are on top, sometimes suspended out on the deep side.
I marked fish on it about 45 mins ago but we were catfishing today.

Pappy I was going by my depth finder when I said thermocline. I did see bait balls, some round and some look like they've been gone thru by fish. Staying at level and just above.

I am going to start a thread in the electronics forum on this but I would be curious to see what the thermocline looks like on your graph. I think I saw it on mine yesterday but I am not 100% sure. I turned the sensitivity to 14 (1-20) on my 859 and was picking up what looked like static or fuzz on anything below about 17 feet. Is that what it looks like?
