Nolin or Green?
Thinking about giving one of these lakes another try, last time I went about 1 week ago I caught nothing. Which lake do you guys recommend for this new crappie fisherman?

we do real good at nolin around wax but everyone tells me that green is much better than nolin, that being said, I have also been told that taylorsville and quist creek are not wurth fishing for crappie but I do pretty well there to, don't know if this helps but good luck.

Well you must be really good at crappie fishing then cause everybody that I meet at taylorsville lake told me that this lake is very tough to catch them crappie. So far i only meet one person that told me that this lake has good amount of crappie but just small.

Every lake mentioned has their up & down years (or times) ... but, hit them right and you'll surprise yourself at what size fish can come from them.

On Nolin Lake you can call Day's Pro Bass Shop in Wax (270-242-6712). They know if anyone's fishing and if the water is muddy. They are open Mon. thru Sat. I've caught a lot of crappie in muddy water, as long as it wasn't just rolling mud.

no just dumb enough to try some of the places I sholdn't, I belive every lake out there has some potential if you look around, that being said some lakes are just better than others but you can adjust your technique and the areas you fish, we went sauger fishing at mcalpine sat and went to the duck pond and there were 5 boats there when we got there and 11 when we left, we only caught 1 sauger in the duck pond, but we went back down river to a spot where there were no other fishermen and we got 40 or better, just because someone else can't catch fish somewhere doesn't mean its a bad place to fish, you just have to adjust, of course sometimes we don't catch fish either, the fish in my avatar wasn't sapposed to be at the lake I caught it at.

I live pretty close to McAlpine Dam but never took my boat out there yet. Everybody keeps telling me that if I don't know the river then maybe it's best to stay away from it because the water is very shallow around some areas and there are a lot of rocks that can damage the boat or lower unit. How true is this?

what I can tell you about mcalpine is it is my favorite place to fish, I have fished it for 27 years but only the last 2 years from a boat, you have to constantly be aware of the river levels and the flow levels it should always be safty first, Ialmost always wear my life jacket, I occasionally take it off in calm water in warmer weather but I always wear it when we are running and always in cold weather, I talked to a guy who works I belive the coast guard and he told me he has never pulled someone from the river that had drowned that was wearing a life vest, you can call the corp of engeniers at 775-5056 to find out what the levels are going to be as well as how many units are running at the hydro, if you are going to fish it from a boat be careful and go slow and take your time, you don't have to learn the river in a day, never anchor near the flowing water at the dam because if they start to raise the water and your anchor gets hung you will sink (always keep a sharp knife around if you anchor may save your life, just past the first set of gates is the duck pound on the left side of the wall, to the right goes to the falls this is one area you have to watch, when it gets under 12 foot (corp of engeniers phone line ) this area gets very shallow and you may not be able to pass, also what kind and size of boat do you plan to fish? forgive me if I kind of ramble and talk in circles I could write on this question for hours, I have learned a lot about the river in 2 years on a boat and talking to people on the forums, keep reading and asking questions and by all means go out there (boat size permiting) and learn all you can and maybe you can teach me something, hope this helps, you can pm me with questions to if you like.
