Thanks Pap. What lakes are south of Lexington? And how far south are they? Taylorsville looks like a big time recreational lake.

Not really, Chaunc .... most lakes of any size are well East, West, or South of Lexington. There are a couple of small lakes right off of I-75, North of Lexington ... 92 acre Boltz Lake - just NW of Dry Ridge, Ky ... and 350 acre Williamstown Lake - just East of Dry Ridge, Ky (see Mapquest or Google Earth)
I believe Boltz Lake may have a 10hp limit ... but Williamstown Lake has no HP restrictions. Both of these lakes are less than 25mi from the I-71 / I-75 split near Walton, Ky.
Here's Boltz Lake (complete w/contour map) : http://fw.ky.gov/pdf/boltzlake.pdf
Here's Williamstown Lake (outline map only) : http://fw.ky.gov/pdf/williamstownlake.pdf
IF you keep on going on I-71, towards Louisville ... your closest bet would be Taylorsville Lake, which is about halfway between Louisville & Lexington.

Taylorsville does get a bit crowded, once the weather gets nice ... but, so do all of the other lakes that are as big or bigger.
Lakes South of Lexington would be ... Herrington Lake, Lake Cumberland, Green River Lake, Barren Lake, Laurel Lake, Nolin Lake, Rough River Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, and of course KY/Barkley lakes. Cave Run Lake, Paintsville Lake, & Yatesville Lake are East of Lexington.
Estimated drive times from Lexington :
Herrington - 45min-1hr
Cumberland - 1.5 - 2hr
Green - 2hrs
Cave Run - 1.5hrs
Taylorsville - 1.5hrs
Ky/Barkley - 4hrs
You'll have to look up the others (Mapquest) as I haven't fished them, & don't know the drive times. Even though Cave Run Lake is East of Lex. ... if you're coming down I-75, you'd just exit onto I-64 and that would take you almost straight to it. The estimated drive times are from my place (East Lex) which is just a few miles from I-75 ... so 15-30mins of my drivetime estimates are simply getting around the bypass, to the highway that would take me to a particular lake.
