    Default Spider rigging questions?


    Hey guys I'm going to attempt spider rigging for the first time this year and wondering if you guys could clear up a few questions I had on the setup. I have everything I need rod holders, long rods, as I usually longline troll in Alabama every spring. I'm just new at the spider rig setup and theres not any good videos showing how people actually set up on you tube. It seems to me that if I have the rods in the holders out in front of the boat and move around using the trolling motor the baits and line would just come right back or to the sides of the boat? How fast do people typically move while spider rigging? Do you use weight to keep the bait down? How heavy? How close to the water do you keep your rod tips? How do you rig your bait with the weight? Weight on the bottom with jigs or minnows above? I know there are several variations, just wanting some input on whats been successful for you guys. I know it's a lot of questions but I know this is the place to get answers from experienced crappie fisherman! Thanks

    I generally spider rig minnows, jigs, or minnow/jig combinations at 0.1mph - 0.4 mph...

    I use 5/8 oz Snake n da brush to keep my baits down...

    You are right about everyone rigging differently it all depends on the crappie, went to Weiss a couple years ago and found I had too run .8 mph with 1 jiffy jig about a 18" deep with half ounce weight above the jig this was in the spring in about 3 feet of water. I run my rod tips about 10" off the water with a 1/2 oz. Weight on the bottom and a jig or hook about 10" above that than 8" above that another jig or hook you don't want your line to get more than a 45 degree angle you can slow down or add more weight depending on the fish. Also the advantage to spider rigging is watch your electronics for ledges or brush piles where you may want to fish these slowly or set on them. The bad thing is usually rough water it is hard to catch fish when your rod tips are in the water than 3' out of the water use wind socks or other ways to slow you down and drift with the wind. there are a lot of variations on spider rigging use different technics until you find what works best for you at that time of year.     Like the set up Ricky.
    I am going to rerig all my spider rigging poles with your snake. I am going to use 2 of the 1/4 oz ones,some how I ended up with enough to 8 poles. From crappie camp.
    I am hoping to get down for the first time in late march.
    I think I will not lose the weight with your set up when I get snagged.

    I use heavier main line than leader line...

    I also use 214EL hooks...

    I loose very few Snake n da brush.... Certainly less than using an egg sinker...

    Let me know how they work for you...

    CCF,

    I recently picked up a couple of dvd's at BPS. They were made by Russ Bailey and the BnM Pro Staff. The name of the DVD;s are B'n'M Prostaff Fishing Tips series 1 & 2. They were very informative with Capps and Coleman showing how they setup their spider rigs.
