    Default Green River

Ok, I have never been to Green River before. I would like to go this weekend. I will be coming from the E-Town direction and would like to know a good place to start. Any help is appreciated.

Wildcatter ... I'd probably go to Holmes Bend. After launching, I'd go left & just around the corner to the right (towards the dam) and work the flats in the 15-22ft range. I'd work starting in the middle, then ease my way towards the rock cliffs until I found the channel edge. I'd work along that for awhile, on both sides.
Then I'd head back towards Holmes Bend Marina, go on past it & take a right around the corner .... then work long stretches down towards the bridge & back, starting along the right hand bank & working my way out into the middle & over towards the cliff side of that stretch.
Why I would do this is simple ... it's how/where I found them back in the late Summer, drifting minnow rigs & jig/minnow combos. I'm not set up for spider rigging or long line trolling, so 2-3 poles each is all my partner & I can manage, which is another reason why we fished this way, since it was as close to spider rigging as we could get.

According to this chart : http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/wc/res...plots/grr.html Green is on a slow rise, & not being pulled as hard as it has been over the last couple of weeks, and it's rising after being stable for a period. I'd check this chart the day before going, to see if the trend continues or reverses.

I'd also recommend sending a PM to CUZZIN & KyTeacher ... and get their take on what would be the best approach. And check back thru the recent posts on Green, & PM those members as well. Hopefully, one or more of them will log in & see your PM (or this post) and offer their help. All of my info is just a "best guess" scenario, as I've not fished Green any later than early Fall. It's just what I would do, based on the capabilities of my boat/electronics, and limited past experience. By no means do I guarantee success with my info ... which is why I'd try & make contact with those that do have greater knowledge of the lake & proven methods for this time of year, and compare their ideas to mine.

Good tips and fishing plan. Also going up river from HB before the bridge on the right is a cliff slide that brought a lot of trees down during the May 2010 high water. There is a lot of junk out into 20 ft of water that may hold fish. Good luck. The marina at HB closed in the fall and the HB General store also closed and may be in transition. If you need minnows stay on Hwy 551 instead of turning onto HB road. about a mile is Green River Bait and store. I have not used him but called to confirm he is open 364 days and selling minnows. You can take West Egypt Road from his place back to HB road and get to the ramp. If misdirected his # is 270-384-5206.
Good luck Wildcatter, be sure to wear that pfd while on the water this time of year.

CP gives good advice for this time of the year, but I wouldn't waste my time on the flats to the left of Holmes Bend. I would focus my attention to the right of Holmes Bend all the way to the bridge.Start on the right hand side and then work your way back on the opposite. There have been good numbers of fish for winter since the water level has normalized. Minnows or jigs tipped with minnows have been most productive. Good luck and be careful of the downed timber mentioned above, it is great crappie cover but is hard on a lower unit. Take it slow and wear your PFD.

Where can you get a map of the fish attractors in Green River Lake? I did not see anything on the KY fish and wildlife webpage.

    Thanks,

The paper Hot Spots map in WalMart in Campbellsville will have several of them dropped by the KDFWR marked for you. But if you stay in the river above Holmes Bends you shouldn't have any trouble locating lots of productive wood poking above the surface and on your locator. The record rains and flooding earlier this year brought in a lot more new cover in that stretch of water that holds fish on a consistent basis.

Used to love to fish Green in the winter when I lived in Kentucky. A lot of good times out there! Good luck!
