    Default Asian Carp?

Fished Kentucky Lake last weekend and about 30-40 minutes before dark a few schools of pretty good sized fish came up within casting distance. At first I thought they were bass but a buddy of mine said the same thing happened to him the week before and he got a good look and said they were Asian Carp. The glare of the sun kept me from identifying them for sure.

Are some of you seeing the same thing? I think most of us feel this problem is a lot more serious and it doesn't look like there is much they can do about it. A couple of weeks ago, I talked to two different people on Barkley that had them jump in the boat with them.

Both of them said they were only going about 10-15 mph when they got in the boat. If they ever start jumping in front of a bass boat or jump up and hit some kid on jet ski's, someone is going to get seriously hurt.

Noticed the same thing on Barkley, seen several large schools of fish and when they moved they left huge boils to big to be bass, had to be asian carp. I have fish this same area for years in the fall and have never seen anything like that. A guy at work told me about his buddy fishing the mouth of Jonathon monday and he seen hundreds of asian carp. Kinda of scary what is happening and no one has answer to stop the massive invasion.

I was fishing in early spring on Ky lake and was going about 5-10mph while eating a sandwich, then all of a sudden I heard a loud thump and my father-n-law was hunched over. It turns out a fish had jumped in the boat hitting my back nav light and the pole came down on his head. It bent the pole the light was on and broke the socket. By the time I turned around nothing was there. Not sure if it was one of those carps, but it had some force to bend the pole the way it did. Father n law was ok....just didn't know what the heck was going on.

Thousands of them coming up in the evenings down around Paris Landing right now. It's only going to get worse.

We shot so many of them on multiple bowfishing trips to the tailwaters this summer that we got tired of shooting them.

You should run a 15 barge tow thru a school of'um! They get on the barges & boat. I've even seen them plum over in the cargo box. Big problem!

Was heading down the lake at about Smith Bay and saw the water boiling at the mouth of the bay. I pulled in there and shut the boat off. As soon as I shut it off and stopped the whole mouth of the bay went crazy! I thought it was stripes or something so I quick put on a crankbait. After several casts into the mess of fish ........nothing. Then I got a good look at some of them. It was not what I wanted to see.....for sure. Big Heads! I sure hope this doesn't go where I think it will.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Was fishing Barkely this weekend, in Eddy Creek and on 2 occasions one jumped in the boat while idling around looking for brush.
I am concerned what the effect this is going to have on our waters.

Well P we seen a few jumping behind our boat too, back in the wake, and not sure if they are effecting the fishing or not but I know it was pretty much dead all week. Picked up a few small ones on your spot out there. All in all we only caught about 15 keepers all week between 3 boats. Manged to pick up some nice cats and few whites and few smallies......DW did haul in a nice smallie that went about 3 lbs and was 18 1/2"......said he was gonna wall hang him..he was proud of it. We was teasing him saying as much as he was talking about it he might as well sleep with it. LOL But have to say, we fished some very PRIME spots there., fish just wasnt there. We had a good trip though, enjoyed fishing with all my buddies and was glad to meet you. Hope we can do it again sometime, next time maybe fish together and catch some fish.
My boat maybe old, but shes still... FAST !!

Heres a reply to an email that I sent to KFWD about the Asian`s in Ky and Barkley. I wanted to see if they had any ideas on trying to control them. Thought you guys might wanna read it also. I`m not sure about the taste test...but any of ya`ll try one let me know. Maybe I`ll go back with my ballglove and catch me a few , LOL

Unfortunately, we are already aware of Asian Carp (silver and bighead carps) in Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. At the current time, commercial fishing is the only logically means for taking these undesirable fish out of the lake. Other means of removal includes bowfishing and incidental catch by sport fishermen. We encourage sport fishermen to either remove their catch of Asian Carp from the lake, or kill the carp by running a knife through it, making sure to hit the air bladder, before returning it to the lake. Puncturing the air bladder will ensure that the fish does not float when dead.

We have adjusted our commercial fishing regulations slightly in the past few years to ensure higher catches of Asian Carp by commercial anglers. I expect a few more changes in the next year to liberalize the regulations even more to allow these anglers greater access to harvested these undesirable fish.

Commercial fishing may never eliminate these carp from our waters, but there is great potential to reduce their numbers.

I keep using the word “undesirable”. But actually there are many people who eat these carp. There is a large market for them over seas as a food fish. Locally there is also a market for these fish as a food source, and they are used in other products like fish meal and fish oils.

Despite the name “carp” which to most makes them seem like an undesirable fish; they actually do taste good. After hearing some people talk about how good they were, I had to conduct my own taste test to become a believer. One slow day last winter, we fried up a few crappie and a few silver carp at our office. A group of about 12 participated in the test. The results were that the carp were quite tasty. Some commented, my self included, that the carp meat was just as white and good as the crappie. I should note though, that the carp have a lot of bones. There is a “Y” bone in the meat that you have to deal with either in the filleting process or in the eating process.
