Default no crappie but got some hybrids

Went to rough river on Sun. Water was 58 to 62 degrees in the afternoon. !0 feet above summer pool. Could not locate the crappie trying everything i knew. Hit one last spot and was ready to call it a day when i lucked into some striper. First time i caught some and the bite was really fast until we ran out of minnows and then they shut down, but got 6 and finally one crappie. Would have tried some artificial but it was time to go. It was a blast catching them on ultralight gear. Hope they taste as good as crappie.

Cut the red streak out, make sure you get it all, then soak in salt water for a day or two, cut into bite size pieces, and release into hot oil. You will be very surprised how good they are. I've had people not be able to tell that they weren't crappie.

As mepperson posted you will need to take great care to remove all the off color meat. After filleting then cut the grey out that was between the meat and skin. Then make sure any blood line is removed.
Salt water will work but I have also used milk.
Those look just like a fish we call White Bass in Wisconsin and I have caught many thousands over the years, because in the spring they run up rivers to spawn and no bag limit is imposed. It's not unusual for boats to have hundreds of them but cleaning them is work. After eating other fresh water fish you will not like the taste of these unless you take the extra care to do as posted in our reply’s.
Next time you are on the water look for jumping minnows and cast small spinners into that commotion and you will have a blast.
