    Default North End Today.

I went out this morning for a few hours before i had to be at work. I brought home 8 keepers. All caught vertical jigging with chartuese jig heads and orange and chartuese jigs. I tried tipping with minnows and nibbles both. The fish didnt seem to prefer one or the other but without either i didnt get a bite. I also caught several short fish and some yella bellies and gills. I am off tomorrow and plan on fishing all day. I will post more results tomorrow night.

how deep are they? and do you have to be on cover?
do you ever cast jigs in the fall ?
I take some vacation and fished Sun, Mon and Tues and did horrible.
I like to cast, and it works well were I fish on Green and Nolin just vary the depth and retrieve.
I am sure the east wind made it tough ,but some of it is me not knowing Barkley and my technique didn't work.
Just curious if any of you guys do much casting.

I caught all of them in 8 - 11 fow. They all came from right on the outside or in brush or stake beds. colayn I am like you I would rather cast. I have been tryin to cast for the last few years in the fall and only catching a few here and there. I have just started to do a lot of vertical jigging and it is paying off.

Thanks for the feedback. When you jig do you have to tip with a minnow or can you use all plastic or hair?
I know I could catch more if I would stop only casting, but I am hard headed. Sometimes I feel like "I will show you fish, you will bite this jig swimming"
My mother in-law lives in Princeton so I do get to fish Barkley some. I am learning that those low land lakes are a different ball game than the high land resoviors here. (Green , Nolin and Rough)
Here I can always count on my brush, a main channel bank or some ditch in a flat. Those features are a lot harder for me to find on Barkley. I know a lot has to do with the time spent on the lake and I fall real short there. Plus I am a recovering bass addict so have only gotten serious with the crappie in the last year.

No you dont have to tip with minnows. Some days it seems to me that the fish want a minnow or nibble and other days they want nothing but a jig.

colayn, for the last 15 years I've casted 98% of the time. Now I'm splitting my time between the two but have to admit I'm starting to lean to tightlining. Right now you should be able to catch a bunch of crappie in the 9" range with a few keepers in the bunch. You can catch big fish by fishing shallow stakes or brush but you have to stay off them.

You might have to use a float or try a weedless jig and get in the brush with them. I seem to have better luck casting when using panfish assassins. I normally use 6 lb. test fluorocarbon line because it is so sensitive. Typical of crappie, some bites are so light that all you notice is your bait suddenly feels a little different. If that doesn't work, I switch to 2" power grubs. Sometimes the crappie want it moving, other times they seem to want your bait to be passive.

One thing will help is adding nibbles to your jig. If you will dry them out till they become stale they will stay on the hook for several casts. Don't try this straight out of the box because they will come off after just a few casts. Except for when you are fishing a float, reeling slow and steady seems to work best.
