what is a good speed for trolling for wipers and walleye

Your right... must be more to it than just driving around, because i averaged 1 in 5 hours. Thats when i decided to stop trolling and was getting off plane.

Shane, What are you trolling with for the eyes? What depth are the crank baits running in 16FOW?

That night we were trolling with 2-3in crankbaits, if I remember correctly shad/chartrues worked well, but color really didn't seems to matter. In 16FOW the crankbaits were running 16ft down, banging the bottom. If you weren't hitting the bottom you weren't catching fish.

what is a good speed for trolling for wipers and walleye.

Troll is all we used to do until the last couple of years. We trolled mainly for walleye and wiper/white bass. I would troll at around 2.5-3.0 mph but my father-in-law would troll at 3.5 to 4.5 mph and knock the snot out of wipers and white bass. Every once in a while he would find the walleye willing to chase them at that speed and when he did he would catch a lot of them. I just always had better luck at the slower speed and some of the lures I was using (hot-n-tots and thin-fins) required me to go slower as they would start spinning at the higher trolling speeds.

Years ago my father and I trolled as slow as we could get his 50 horse motor to go and caught a lot of fish but there was another local that trolled like he was water skiing and did very well on walleye.
I think it all depends on the time of the year and even the body of water you are fishing. I gave up trolling as to me it just isnt all that fun to winch in a fish while moving at 3 mph, you just dont get to fight the fish and have the fun of the fight.
I might still do it if I cant find fish that will cooperate any other way but I am having a blast still fishing for crappie and walleye.
