Make sure to get the right kind and there is a lot of good info in the sticky post on this board. The kind of whip finish tools you want is the Matarelli style and not the Thompson!

Squirrel is good stuff and the length shouldn't make any problem at all really. I use tails longer than that in marabou.

FAOL is a fly tying/fishing forum and they also have lessons starting at beginning, then intermediate and finally advanced and you should spend some time there.
