Ok, first I will admit that is a baited topic for a reason. My question isn't do you think the art you create works as I know it does but my question is when do you feel that it will out perform tube baits? I'm new to tying and have fished mostly tubes and grubs and would like to know from you guys that fish a lot of hand made when they are the better option?

By the way the more I tie the more I want to tie. I'm so hooked on this. LOL

    Thanks

Soft plastics have their place and sometimes will do great, but also lots of time a feather will out fish most anything IMHO! The deal really starts when you catch fish on a jig you tied and that is special and only gets worse as far as the addiction! The more you tie the more materials you want to work with and the more and more you buy. Soon you have more jigs than you could ever use and still tying, LOL!

also I don't think anything will out fish a good small 1/32 oz marabou jig in spring and probably fall as well! I use Roadrunners at these times and just marabou tails,

I can attest to that statement! What's more, there's no cure!

i HAVE, and will probably, catch more fish on plastics than I have ever even come close to on tied jigs. Don't ask me why, bc I've fished with tied jigs that've come from the greatest of tying hands. With that said, when the fish are ON, it doesn't matter the material, AND a tied jig will outlast a plastic by a country mile. I'm a vertical, structure based river fisherman, not a troller. Jigs don't last unsnagged and broken off here if you want to catch fish.

It will get worse, believe me especially as you get faster at tying. Enjoy it because this is something you can do for so many years!

Only thing more addicting than tying is hang around on C.D.C All aside the best part is when u get on the water and see if your creation will catch fish.

Each bait has its time. I tie jigs now an tinker with plastic baits. Ive seen times handtied jigs out perform 3 to 1. Cold water I think plastics do the best here in Oh.

When it gets colder try some kip tail jigs, it's probably one of the better things you could use in cold water. The fish are not very aggressive and personally I don't think they like all the action so kip tail give a less action kind of jig and they do work really well. I use them very early spring when the water temps here are in the lower 50's. Much colder than that and I am not fishing because the air temp is lower than that, LOL!

I use 2 rods when I work piles in deeper water and have a plastic on one and a hand tie on the other. The fish speak and only the foolish and distracted don't listen when they do. I have had jigs tied from scraps on the tying bench be the winner of the day, one in particular has over 80 quality fish caught on it and though it shows some wear it's still ready to go. It is retired and I keep it in the box hoping some of it's magic will rub off on the other "Rookies". The addiction only gets worse........
Do I need to make my own? Probably not but my internal motor runs kinda quick and I just can't sit on butt and watch the tube. Having worked with my hands before my current trade it was just a no brainer for me to do this. My first hook order was for 7000 hooks, I guess I get carried away. Having found a winner pattern that you pour, paint and tie and then slam good fish with.............PRICELESS!!!
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
