Looks like you may be using the tips cut from stem. In which case, there is no stem anyways. Will work as good as if you stripped em, lined em up then cut em. Way better movement then hackle however you cut it. Or cut it.

However you wrap it, don't cut it afterwards.

I try not to leave thread exposed but there are some very successful jigs that the thread is out there exposed Some that are even tied by members here and used by fisherman on the greatest sac lakes in MS. SO whose to say what's right or wrong. Threadnecks are just missing chenille
It's mostly style to sport fisherman. Fish just wanna eat.
