I have started to put a basic tying kit together. What size thread do most of you use in tying jigs? Any out standing brand? Colors?
    Thanks..

Personally I like Danville 210 flat waxed best (also for color I will use the 210 Flymaster Plus in Danville), but for color I will also use 140 Danville and Ultra. If I have to I will use some 6/0 which I break a lot if not careful. I do have a few colors I use the 6/0 in just because I can't get the color I want in the others.

I use Danville 70 denier (6/0) for most of my ties. Of course I just started tying jigs, been tying flies for a couple of years. If I wanted the color to show I would use 210.

Color still doesn't show with 210 at least on my jigs. I would use smaller on flies as there are lots of reasons for that, but jigs I like bigger for strength. I don't break it near as much as I do 6/0. I have some down to 14/0, but only for tiny flies, well tiny in my eyes, LOL!

I also have a good bit of silk to tie with (that would about equal 8/0 in size, but a bit stronger than regular thread) and use it some on rope dubbing, but also use mono a lot for that.

I say use what you like, I do and usually there is a reason I use what I do where I use it.

I do like 140 a lot too as it's strong enough that I can deal with it going fast without too many breaks. As for 6/0 I think there is just a couple of colors I use that I can only find in 6/0.

Even brand is always a discussion and ends up usually just because that is what they like, but also sometimes because one will slip more than another brand as they are made different. Example Uni is made different than Danville or Ultra and both have their place. I am not a fan of Uni though someone told me not long ago why he liked it and I may try some of that pattern next time I tie it to see if I have a easier time. I have plenty so no need to buy any so will not cost me to try it. I like Uni 6/0 a lot more than their 3/0 which I just hate.

I use 6/0 Uni quite a bit for jigs. Also 140 denier UTC and Danville. Those are what I would recommend. I go down to 8/0 Uni with micro jigs and smaller flies.
