Good advice Skip. At 62 you are still young. It is like riding a bike. All you have to do is get back on it and you will remember everything you think you forgot.

I have been so busy for something like 1 1/2 - 2 years and finally got a slight slow down and am trying to go back and add so what I was doing with especially flies. Boy how much I lost in that time just because I have not been using the techniques I needed and now trying to just get back to where I was. I should have never just completely stopped doing all that and at least a little time each week would have even made me better by now. So kind of mad at my self over this.
After all if I was just 25 years old it's no big deal, but at 62 and physically not so hot condition, it's bigger. I will get it back and more though and already started. Bought some things to make me do more flies. Gonna do some things for gills too with them.
Anyway just telling you guys keep re-doing things or steps even if your not using them for a while. Just don't let what you learned and got muscle memory working for you on get away so you have to learn it again.

May God be with you. Keep CALM and STAY ANCHORED with your faith.
Have to do it or it gets rusty. thankfully the rust gets knocked of pretty quick and we get polished back up pretty easy.
Look forward to seeing some of your flies.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.
Your right Ship. It was 40 years since I put together a jig. It seems like I'm better now at 65 than I was at 20. Do you suppose the quality of equipment might have something to do with it? :-)

hunter I think for me it's just something I like a lot and when I do things sometimes my perfectionist stuff gets in the way, but at the same time I think it make me make better jigs. Heck I even compete with my self in some ways.
I bet you take more time and relax more now when doing something like tying? Got to say equipment also has it's part for sure.
I just hate that part of that time was wasted for nothing other than me not taking a few minutes a week to keep polished and now when I tie something I expect better than what I have been doing/.learning some new things mixed with old.

You'll get back the feel for flies, don't worry! Try working on a few Catskill style dry flies..... That'll drive ya nuts if you're not "in shape"! Some upright and divided wings and quill bodies are BRUTAL if everything isn't set up correctly. Pretty soon those 1/64 oz jigs will be a walk in the park!
In all seriousness, tie up some gill flies, bust out the fly rod, and have some fun! #12 furled tail mohair leeches, #8 bead chain eyed hares ears, and some little minnow flies.... Heck of a time!

I know what you mean by the perfectionist. I'm so bad I even take a Dremil tool to all my heads to get the rough edges off before I paint them.

Yes qk I know and am looking forward to next spring or late spring actually since the big gills happen here around May. I also want to catch some crappie on my fly rod in the worst way. Think I am going to tackle that Parks Shrimp before that so I will have a few of them.
hunter I do the same thing, I use my Dremel with the buffs to smooth it all unless I just have a few to do and then I use a small flat file. Now on the Roadrunners I just use the file on it for that since the Dremel wouldn't fit in all the spots.

Don't worry I took a year off from tying flies and it only took a few weeks to get it all back, just tie slo wly!!!!!!! It'll drive you nuts ut it works.

Hey I started making a come back today on the dubbing stuff. Did a few jigs just for tying and was not even looking for something I would uses, but I am excited because I did what i wanted.
Thanks,
