Another First

Fatman was kind enough to share one of the molds he found and had doubles of. Now keep in mind that I just recently poured my first sinkers in a mold that's over 60 yrs old, made of cast iron. I don't have tons of 'sperience. All I have to use for lead is a boatload of wheel weights, not the most desirable. But I got the mold in the mail and had to give it a try anyway. The pics show heads from 2 molds. The ball collar mold was Dad's too and it doesn't align right. The others came from the newer mold, and if you look you can see that the lead didn't flow all the way into the collars. No big deal since I've taken to cutting them off lately anyway. But here they are, and if they all have to be trimmed like these did, I won't be doing much pouring. Too time consuming. Third pic is the ball collar heads(duh) and if you look at the first pic you can see that the mold cast a ring to tie the line to. Diggin out the eye under all that was different, probably wont use that one much. It casts 1 each of 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4. No barn burner for production. Thanx for lookin.

i have a mold laying that pours ball heads perfect for tying..interested let me know, been used like 10 times, i bought it for the 1/80 and 1/64 only. then i ordered the 1/80 and 1/64 from flatfish.....

The bottom ones sure work good on kip tail jigs. I like the ones that don't have a barb, but almost all mine or no collar and only some small jigs for hait that I use the collar and like not having the barb and that little flair on the end is nice to hold you thread in a nice small place.

maybe the pure lead would be better in that mold (gotta get my landlord to clear out the shed so I have somewhere to pour). How long did it take you to trim them up??? They look good all trimmed up.

Seeing that the lead got into the eyelet hole maybe I'll try and get some JB weld and just slightly fill the edge of the hole adn see if it cuts down on the amount of lead getting into the eye.

Took quite a while to trim them. The ones from the new mold didn't take too much trouble to trim, but the older on one was something. I have some real good side cutters, small ones, used with the tiny electronics that are real hard and trim things easy. Trying to pour with a cast iron pot and ladle was a real experience too. It was fun but a chore with basic equipment. I can see where a production pot makes it much easier. And I think pure lead would be easier. My time is so tight that this was just a try. I'll probably buy what I need til I get some better equipment. Thanx Fatman, for everything.

Try some sickles in there.They have a larger eyelet and the lead may not go in there.

Baxter, these are both round head molds, and yours look more teardrop. Those are just funky pours. Those will work good though, as I'm sure you already know. I don't really need to pour my own, but after hearing of y'all doing them I had to give it a try.
