    Default Fluorescent colors and materials

    Hello Folks,
I'm new to the forum I haven't been tying crappie jigs very long but have been tying and fishing fly rod and spinning jigs for trout for about 20 years.

I have been looking at some of the crappie jigs that are displayed around here and was wondering about the use of fluorescent paints and tying materials that you folks make use of. My question is whether the fluorescents are favored for jig head paint, body or tail materials? Is making everything fluorescent too much?

Do you think that fluorescent colors make that much difference to the crappie?

    Thanks in advance!

    Mort

Yea, I know, and I have done well at times on some miserable flies that I cobbled together on a whim. Still on average flies or jigs are more successful when they follow a discernible pattern. Some patterns are mostly localized to given lakes or streams and some work most everywhere you fish them. I am just trying to get a handle on how the fluorescents add to crappie jigs and what is the best place to use them.

The last few days the winds have whipped the local lakes to something that resembles a rich frothy chocolate milk. I have been fishing yellow/chart. curly tails but think I could do better with marabou and crystal flash jigs that will have a bit more action when just slightly twitched under a bobber. I am fishing the debris around a couple of beaver lodges.

    Welcome...
Couldn't agree more that this is THE best and best run crappie site on the web.
Here in west central Indiana at this time of the year, it seems that the crappie are most reseptive to Flur./ Chart., Hot Purple, Hot Pinks, Chart/Black... I ALWAYS use some sort of Flash or Flashabuo. I feel it triggers that agressive impulse to strike.. At different times of the year and seasons I tend to throttle back on the extreme bright colors. Here are some examples... hopes this helps..

Welcome to the site, Best in the Business. To answer your question, Yes. All 3. I tie jigs that I've seen work for others, and after a while a little idea comes into mind and you say "I wonder what that will look like?" and so it begins. Little by little you'll gather what you'll use most. I tie a lot of bare lead head jigs that produce so it's not a thing that "if it's not colored it won't work." I use pink, yellow, and chartreuse in the flo. colors, sometimes on the same jig.

Hey I like what ever I catch them on. However I can count on most any spring using early Chart/Med. Blue/Chart then followed by Silver/Same Blue/White. This year I ended up later going with Silver/Silver/LT/ Blue and I mostly use Roadrunners in 1/32 with marabou tails.

Oh and I really also like Silver/FL yellow/Lt. Blue in both Roadrunners and regular ball head jigs.

Welcome! I am fairly new here, too. Where in Kansas do you live? Where do you fish? I live in Lawrence and fish (when I have free time) at Clinton and some of the other lakes (LaCygne, Coffey, etc).
