This guy just told me what colors he liked best and what kind of jigs he wanted and I put the whole thing together for him. Takes me a lot longer that way, but I do it a good bit. You do have to figure out what to put where and hope it looks like you think it will.

Most tell me what color head and body and tail they want and that is a lot easier for sure.

I know what you mean about the price of some materials my friend. Having said that, no one ties to make a ton of money. In fact sometimes you are doing well if you break even and have a few jigs for yourself. Those are nice Skip.
