Most of you may know this little Indian trick but I'm going to mention it anyway. I always bend the hook on my jig about 10 or 15 degrees so the hook tip is not aligned behind the head of the jig head. I don't miss as many bites this way. Thought we needed a post or two and who knows somebody may not have tried it.
It ain't nuttin but luck.

Way back when I used to miss all kind of bites on my pin mins thru the ice. Seemed like it cost me about 6 waxworms per fish. Finally got my little # 10 snagged in a brushpile. When I got it back the hook was slightly opened. Bite was so hot and heavy I did not bother to " fix ". All of a sudden my catch ratio shot way up. Hmmmmm that was well over 45 years ago but now it just second nature to me. Small hook open up slightly.
