Along with Crappie I am also a fan of huge bluegill. When I learned to use a flyrod about fifty years ago at the age of 12 yrs. One local state lake gave up huge gills and supplied my and my uncles families with a bunch of great eating.
While I was reading on fly tying sites. Some of the old patterns I reconized royal coachman , black gnat , adams etc etc
I thought why not tie some these patterns on real small jigheads. Will post some pix of my trial patterns. To me a jig is like using a weighted fly. See no reason why they won't work but hey I been wrong before.

I use the WFM formula. "Works For Me." Gills and Shellcracker love them.

Me too, been doing that for a long time. I'll throw out another one "Hornberg" just a killer on crappie.
I tie some nondescript stuff for the fly rod. Just getting back into it but bluegill aren't too finicky. If it doesn't look like food it just has to peak their interest to make em hit. I'll post more when I can pry the spinning rod out of my hands.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
Have tied a bunch over the years!!!!!!!! I've also seen some articles in mags about fly patterns on jig heads. If they're working keep tying em.

That sounds like a great idea to me. Big bluegills are favorites of mine, too - and for their size they put up a great fight. I've always thought that if bluegills grew to 5 or 10 lbs., people would forget all about fishing for bass. I know I would.
Between the ages of 17-21 I fished only for bass largemouth and smallmouth. At the age of 22 something changed in me and I have pursued panfish ever since. I still catch bass every now and then but its always an accident. Same with walleye , although walleye are a good tasting fish , if I catch any its an accident. Walleye go into cooler, bass are always released.
From 22-62 of age (so far) I have exclusively fished for panfish more precisely large panfish. Jumbo perch , brophies my word for a trophy bluegill , slab crappies remain my target wether through the ice or open water. To compensate for the lack of size I fish with really small equipment to maximize the fun. Walleye are immensely popular in Ohio and most people still stare at me oddly when I note that panfish are my favorite.
