I recommend starting off with a beginner vise. It is inexpensive, you might learn how to tie better on one, and you will have a spare when you buy a better one down the road that you can lend to someone else who wants to try it.

I was checking out the vises in the Janns Netcraft catalogue...thought about buying a cheaper one first..then upgrading later !!..Just like I did with my fishing equipment !!...:D

Another option is older Herter's or Thompson vises off of eBay.
