    Default New to tying

I got a bass tying kit from Bass Pro a month ago and have tied about 18 jigs. I would like some advise on material. I should have read more threads because I just bought some deer body hair and this seems to flare. I am going to try and post a pic of the last jigs I tied. The latest is top to bottom being the first ones. These are not all but the best of the ones I have tied. I have alot of questions to ask and will post them as I go along. Yall take a look and let the advise fly good or bad. Thanks

Looks like you're off to a good start! There is a lot of videos on youtube with some simple but effective patterns. Check out the jig picture thread as well for some other ideas. Don't be afraid to ask questions here either, lots of talent and experience on this forum. Welcome to the addiction,be prepared to spend a lot of time and money

Pretty good for just starting. You should catch fish on any of those.

I agree with JJJ, looks darn good for just getting into it, welcome to the board!!! I try to keep it simple and have fun.

For material, I like chenille bodies myself and use lots of natural colors for my lakes. There are lots of colors to choose from in chenille so you can go crazy there. Marabou and hackle are the best tail material IMO, but buck tail has its place on larger jigs as well as calf and squirell tail on very small jigs. If you need links on where to get stuff, let us know.

I would also check out some fly tying videos and sites, they are good to learn the basic stuff and alot of the ideas work the same for jigs. Keep it up.... Lookin' good!!!

First don't make the tails so they end up with all the fibers being all the same length, or not squared off, but rather more of a taper look.

Over all I think you are doing well for a beginner for sure. You can learn a lot right here on this board so read some of the old post on things and for sure the sticky's up at the top of the page.

Mostly I like chenille body and feather tails on my jigs and you can look at my web site and see what I mostly tie. Don't by your chenille from some place like Walmart or a fabric store. Get it from fly tying suppliers.

Just got back from the Alabama River trying out some of my jig. My dad and I only caught 3 and kept 2. The 2 we kept I caught on the jigs I made. That made me feel good. The 2 fish were 12 to 13 inches long. Thanks for the support and advise and be ready for more questions.

Congrats! I know I was very excited when I caught my first fish on my own jigs.

Congrats as that is always a great thing that can happen, but it will also set the hooks into you deeper, LOL!

Janns and Barlows have pretty good supplies and reasonable too. They put a Bass Pro Shop about 22 miles away in Leeds Alabama and I visit them a lot for supplies. For a beginner you are doing very well. Again, to echo and reinforce what Skip said, I never cut off or square the tails on my jigs either. To me they pulsate, undulate, and look more natural when they are left "Flowing." Welcome to the fun of tying your own. I guarantee you that yours will be better than any that come from China or Walmart plus you'll be pround that you made them yourself.

    You are welcome here
