    Default smelly question?

Is anyone using GULP ALIVE spray on their jigs? Am reading about great success with it being used in salt water on redfish and speckled trout. It comes in three scents-crawfish, earthworm, and garlic. Just curious as to the crappie-I'll try anything. Also wonder what scent is used in the containers (small tubs) that we're seeing in the stores?

I have been using it, mostly the garlic. I use Mike's anise gel mostly for crappie and gills on my jigs though. I smoke so I think if some scents don't work that great that they at least mask the smell on my hands.

As far as it working for crappie and gills I noticed it does get them to bump it more with the garlic and earthworm, those are the only Gulp Alive scents I have used.

Now as far as trout go I have noticed a huge difference with the garlic vs not using anything. I have fished next to guys using the same setup and same bait and have out fished them 4 fish to 1. I am a firm believer of it when it comes to trout at least. I don't know if it has a big effect on other species or not as I haven't personally done a side by side with other species.

As for the stuff that is in the Gulp Alive alive wells I don't know if they are all the same or not, but I am pretty sure the smaller ones that are in the same jars as powerbait and the gulp plastics is some form of red wiggler extract. I knew it was familiar smelling then I started growing my own red wigglers and the scent they excrete when you handle them smells dead on with the scent from the gulp scent.

I use the gulp alive in the plastic containers, remove some of the juice and soak plastic tubes in it.Hollow tubes get the attractant inside and outside.Soak tied plated jigs that don't rust for several days and let dry, especially kip and squirrel. You don't have to tip jigs,at least for a little while.

    Default Good Stuff

Berkley has been a leader in Attratants for a long time. Dr. Keith Jones is , in my mind, the worlds authority on the subject. He is Berkley's man. He is a personal friend of mine and I got to try some of the very early products and proto types of Strike, Power Bait, and Gulp. The new Alive is great as was stated you can soak your jigs in the bucket. It comes in 16oz. and 32oz. pails filled with there "magic gravy".

If you are using the 2 inch minnow grubs and if is still good after fishing it throw it back in the pail and it will remain good for a nother day. A big plus because with the first generation of Glup it would be only good for one dunk in the water. Leave it on the jig and it would dry to the point that a pair of dykes would be needed to get it off. Talk about like a rock.

Glup is a biodegradable plastic that is manufatured in a freeze dried method. with the attratant frozen into it. Dr. Keith has told me many times that it is food for fish molded like a bait. You will catch more fish with Glup than with live bait. Have proven this many times. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

The only other attratant that I have used only because this guy I was fishing with was using and doing really well is WD-40. Have found out that in the fall of the year Oct thur first part of Dec. When I vertical jig you will get more hit by using some on your jig. We can be fishing 8 feet apart and Carl will be using WD-40 on his jigs and I nothing he will take 3 to my one when both of us are using it we do just about equal. I have read somewhere that it is made with keosene and fish oil. Can't swear to it but found that it does work.

Does anyone have a way to keep the crappie nibbles on the hook with the jig?

I have been leaving them open or out when I am fishing and they dry out. Once they dry out the only time I have had them come off was on a fish. I have a small powerbait jar that I put batches in at a time so the whole jar or jars since I use a variety of colors don't dry out unevenly.

If I am starting to get low on the dry ones I put them in when I am done fishing for the day so next time I am out I can have them already in the process of drying out. It will take a minute or so for them to start to dissolve like normal but I haven't seen a change on how effective they are.

You guys and your smellies... I scoff on your deplorable use of smellies. Might as well electrofish or use a net or dynamite!

    hahaha just ruffling your hackles

I use no scent. I smoke a lot and figured they might like the smoke flavor.
