To get the taper, once they are on the shank i start at about the middle of the shot and use pliers and squeeze them some... rotate a little, squeeze, rotate, squeeze, roatate... to keep the shape round. Then i move down just a little towards the squeezed end and repeat that. If you continue to move down with this process, it will taper to a point. Then i go back and use a file to get the opposite end flat so the 2 shots butt together. Hope that makes sense....
You do have to make sure they they do not slip on the shank once you start tying, so i build up a little "bubble" of thread in front of and behind the whole weight. Once they are locked in, i just cover the weights with filler thread, like the couple you can see in the pic. Cover them with a healthy dose of head cement and set them aside to tie once they are dry. Sounds like a big process, but they have proven to be worth it!![]()
