That's not been my experience with it ... but, I have only used it a few times since I got it, earlier this year. It may help you find cover, well before you get to it, and it may show you whether there's fish on that cover from a distance, but so does SI & 360. It might show you a fish coming up to your bait, but it doesn't tell you if the fish is actually biting that bait (your rod tip sensitivity does that). It doesn't make "catching" them any easier, but it does make "finding" them easier than a 2d or DI unit can. IMHO it's just another tool, a piece of equipment, that makes fishing a little easier ... but can also be frustrating as heck, when you can see a school of fish but not get any of them to bite your offering.
Just like a 20' glitter rocket boat with a 250hp motor on it & 36v 115# thrust trolling motor isn't "necessary" to catch Crappie, your choice of electronics is "your choice" to make & determine if it's "necessary".
