hit the lake again friday and had the same success as the past few trips. both of us limited in just a few hours. the sun seems to be the key. each time we went when it clouded up the switch turned off just like that. the trick each time was get the jig in the brush pile then swim it away slowly and wam. this out produced strait jigging a pile

Thanks for the sangchris post i love going there but dont get to go to often. But i will be going sunday are parts of the lake still closed? Last few times i went in the spring i caught a ton of shorts and was tough to find overs. Anyhow thanks again for the info it seems most people that fish there are pretty tight lipped or arent on cdc.

Sorry brownie for not seeing your post earlier. Yes, the east and west arms of the lake are closed for waterfowl hunting until January 31. you have to stay in the center arm, but both the East boat ramp and Strawkas Point ramps are open. My son and I went out Friday and I have to say we had a blast! We actually went to shake out a couple of things on the boat. Just for kicks, we threw a couple of rods in the boat. We have a 70hp motor, and we checked, you can use the big motor to load and unload the boat, but we had to use the trolling motor for everything else. We pull into the ramp and there are 20-25 trucks in the lot. What? On a Friday? In the middle of January? Then, we pull down to put the boat in and see there are 10-15 boats scattered within 500 feet of the ramp. Well, they must be catching something and they aren't far away, which is key, when all you have is a trolling motor. So, we join the crowd and immediately start catching crappie. After catching a dozen, all of which are 1/2"under the size limit, we decide to break from the crowd and start experimenting. We head back towards the ramp, and bam, we both get a hit. We both pull in 11" crappies. We float back over the spot, and again, a keeper in the boat. All of this within 70-80 feet of the boat ramp. We fish this spot for about another hour as its getting dark now and end up with 10 keepers. Not bad for a day of boat checkout!

Good reports guys. Are there any crappie being caught shallow, or are they on the deeper piles? Might head that way tomorrow after hopefully a quick morning of goosin. You can PM if you would prefer that. Thanks.

yes they are shallow but you really have to just keep moving for the shallow ones. best bet 6 to 10 ft of water seems to be best. you will catch alot just shy of 10
All the crappie we caught were in 6 to 8 feet of water. We tried shallow with no luck and we tried deeper with no luck. It looked like they were holding right where the water began to drop off from 5' down to 9' or 10'. Our fish finder is embarrassingly crappy, so I couldn't tell, but I think we were fishing a weed edge. If we got off that edge (at 6' deep) very much, we had much fewer hits.Originally Posted by birdman
