    Default How fast to troll

When I first get on the water I use two complicated highly technical methods to determine how fast to troll. I calculates that the colder and muddier the water is the slower the fish will be movin which means I should troll slow so they can catch my baits. On the other hand, iffen the skies are bright and the water is warm the fish will be feeling friskier and I orter be moving a good bit faster to give them somethin to chase.

My second method is to keep a watch the other fishermen and try to copy what the ones that are catching fish are doing, which reminds me, I need to get a better pair of binoculars.

What do yall use to decide on what speed y'all troll at when your longlining, water surface temperature, water clarity, how bright the day is, whether the cows are standing up or laying down, or how the coffee grounds settle in the bottom of your cup?

I start at 1 mph (4 clicks on my co-pilot) and adjust up or down until the fish start hitting my jigs. I know that trolling at 1 mph I am running my jigs at about 6-6.5 ft in depth.

I must be doing something right as I managed to put a few fish in boat once in a while.

.9 to 1.1 mph. I change jig head sizes to achieve my desired depth. Very rarely do I ever troll any faster or slower , no matter the water temp, color, sunshine or overcast.

I haven't gotten into longlining yet but if the cows are laying down I start at about .3 when I am spider rigging. If they are standing I bump it to .4 or better. Haha! Seems like old cow myth I mentioned the other day has gained some popularity...

I adjust to what to what the fish want. I've caught them as slow as .6 and as fast as 1.5mph. Generally though I start at 1 mph and adjust from there.
