If you are going to troll, the Auto Pilot is worth its weight in gold. But the Auto Pilot aint gonna do you much good for shooting docks.Spend the extra $$$...You'll be glad you did on those trips that you troll.

I am about to purchase a new trolling motor. I know I'm going with a Minn Kota but can't decide on whether or not to spend the extra $200 on Auto Pilot. Is it worth the extra money? $200 will buy a lot of jigs and minnows.
Also, I troll some but probably shoot docks more. Is the Auto Pilot good for holding you in place shooting docks ?

My opinion is if you troll a lot spend the money and get the auto pilot. You can shoot docks with the auto pilot but if I primarily shoot docks I would save the money because you can do much better job controlling the boat with a regular trolling motor. That's my opinion and I am sure many will disagree. I use both type trolling motors. One for trolling and one for shooting docks. I have a base plate on my boat and each of my trolling motors have a base plate attached. I can change out the trolling motors fairly quick depending on what type fishing I want to do that day. Of course if you go trolling and decide to shoot some docks then you have a problem. You can shoot docks with the auto pilot but it's a little slower reacting and in my opinion you can shoot twice as many docks in a way with the regular trolling motor.
You might want to go shooting docks with someone that uses an auto pilot and then you can judge for yourself.
I agree with Papa Dawg. I used to have a standard troling motor. Now I have the autopilot. I wouldn't trade it for anything when it comes to trolling. I do shoot docks with it, but it was much easier when I had the standard cable style trolling motor.
Let me throw you another curve ball. Have you considered the I-pilot? I'm about to upgrade to one just because of shooting docks. It's supposed to lock you in on one spot so you don't even have to fool with the trolling motor while you're shooting. Just a thought.
To heck with work, lets go fishing.
Tell me more about the Spot Lock feature? How does it work?
When you find a "spot" you dont want to leave, hit Spot Lock and the TM will return to that spot if you drift more than 5 feet away from it. Sorta like an electronic anchor. I saw this feature work at Talquin in the wind and it was great!.....Or you can elect to move around away from that area and 30 minutes later return to the Spot Lock and the TM will automatically return you to the last spot you locked on to.
The I Pilot looks good. I might have seen it but never read about it until now. Since I'm going to buy a new TM it would only cost a little more than $100 vs the auto pilot.
The Spot Lock does sound like a handy feature.
TnT, do you have one or just see it in use?
Ez1 I Believe You Are Thinking Of The Co Pilot It Is Just A Remote. The I-pilot Is A Gps Remote That Can Control Speed, Spot Lock, And Has The Auto Pilot. It Also Has An Advanced Auto Pilot Feature Which I Haven`t Gotten Used To Yet. The Ipilot Is The Way To Go I Love Mine.
