I know I am from the West Coast but this post is great. Have done it so many times to my buddies they will never believe me until they see the fish. Is a lot of laughs to mess with the tourists when you land this monster fish and tell them it is like 20 lbs. over the state record for trout, of course it is a salmon and when/if they catch one they run to the fisheries dept. and try to claim their trophy.
We have a hybrid gill/crappie something here of some kind. It is not even counted on the books but it gets to like 7 pounds. Had a couple people a few years ago come up from Cali and fished for gills and caught a couple. They tore out of there when we told them where the DFW office was, didn't even have to tell them it wasn't a record, they just assumed it was. When they came back 2 hours later we never heard the end of. "You could have told us is was a hybrid fish and not a bluegill." We just looked at them and finished off our stringers and went on our way.
Best one yet was when one of my buddies was asked what a fish was that someone caught, he said it was a huge Golden Crappie and really rare. Of course it was a big carp but them tourists didn't know differently. They got it mounted at a local taxidermy so if you ever hear anyone talking about a golden crappie you can blame us way out west.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.
