Wow, thanks for update Mike - didn't know that. Is it because salt water spieces
can travel greater distances than freshwater spieces being restricted to lakes and
streams not necissarly emptying into a salt water source.

Question is: What is their reasoning for requiring a Saltwater License regardless of
    age ?

That could be an expensive lesson. I remember a bait store owner around Keaton telling me that redfish were $500 per inch for over or under the slot! Never tried to find out if true. Sure made me measure twice and stayed a extra inch inside both ends of the slot.

You do not need a recreational hunting, freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing license or a *Florida waterfowl, migratory bird, deer, turkey, snook, spiny lobster, archery season, crossbow season, muzzleloading season permit or *management area permit if...

    • You are a child under 16 years of age (also exempt from federal duck stamp requirements).
    • You are a Florida resident age 65 or older possessing proof of age and residency or possessing a Resident Senior Citizen Hunting and Fishing Certificate. Residents age 65 or older may obtain, at no cost, complimentary hunting and fishing certificates from county tax collectors' offices.

Thanks Russ, that backs up my original thinking on being over 65 / senior citizen
    thing.
    Being exempt.

Back in 1989 I caught one 52" off the beach. Buddy left to go by a disposable camera for pictures. I had it tied on a rope so he could revive in the surf. A concerned citizen called marine patrol as they figured my buddy went to get a cooler. I was facing a felony charge, loss of vehicle, loss of hunting and fishing privelages and loss of tackle. My buddy returned with a Walgreens bag with camera and receipt. Warden had a lready measured and released fish so the only proof I had was a $275.00 ticket. Thank god he bought a camera. So yes measure 2 or 3 times. Amazing how quick they got there. All transpired in less than 15 minutes.

Personally i do not take any chances. Do not fish in saltwater very rarely ride in
Saltwater equipment - (get seasick in bathtub - when eyes cannot see land, every
thing goes up-side-down for me) strange but it happens........
I'll stick with freshwater - less maintance on equipment (washing - cleaning after every
use) wet & forget is my motto. Less service required, less cost involved with initial
investment needed -match equipment with spieces you are fishing for and it will be
    absolute blast.

You need a bull red screaming drag on a 7 foot medium rod with 10 lbs test and an average spinning reel or a gator trout blowing up on a top water bait to cure that mess. I am afraid if I lived closer to the Gulf I may not even crappie fish anymore! Well maybe a little.

Sorry for the hijack. I just get carried away when I think about a redfish on crappie gear
