No to say I'm old, but back in the day the Navy used the south east area of lake george as a bombing range. They stoped using it quite a few years ago, but the pilings and old targets boards are still there. My grandfather use to take me there in the summer for bream, and specks in the winter and spring. They would send helocopters overhead to warn boaters to leave the area. You got about a 30 minute warning then in came the planes. He would wait till the 29th minute to leave. The old radio control tower is still there on what is called Pine Island.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

I don't lurk or post much, but Louisa was absolutely barren a month ago.

Having BY FAR the hardest time in the past 20 years finding keepers in Central Florida. Tried 13 lakes in the past 2 months and only one was decent. Don't know what's going on. Others I've talked with are having the same issues. Could be the warm weather or the heavy rains a few months ago?

Yep, I am hearing the same thing about Clermont Lakes. Fish7777, have you tried Lake Griffin lately? You oughta give her a try.

    Hey Crappielover,

No I haven't tried Lake Griffin. I only fished that chain (Lk. Harris) once, about 5 years ago, and the water was very "soupy green" with almost no visibility. Caught a few smaller ones and each one was white as a sheet of paper. Maybe Griffin is better.

That sounds like Griffin alright. Griffin is a big lake, but there are many productive areas. I like the area in and around the Ocklawaha River. It's beautiful up there.

Sorry for opening a old thread but this looked like a good place to start. I was in Astor from 2/20/15 to 3/10/15 and planed on taking the run out to the bombing range to fish the sunken barge. Once I got to Astor a man told me that all of the pilings / poles at the bombing range have been pulled and are stacked on the river bank south of lake George. A friend of mine there has fished it many times with a friend. His friend marked the center of the barge on his GPS, but... the GPS has been damaged and I could not retrieve the numbers to put me on top of the barge. I was wondering if anyone has the actual GPS numbers that would put me on top of the barge when I go back next year. Thanks JC

I'm sorry to hear that they pulled em all out. A friend was there a few years before I moved(05) throwing a rattle trap around the posts when he got a hard strike. There was a copper colored flash over 2 feet long and it turned and headed north, never to be slowed down. It seems Redfish like Traps too, he never slowed it down and it spooled the reel he was using while he tried to get moving. Sorry to hear those days are gone. I've heard of the barge but can't help with any coordinates. Good luck with finding them.

They aren't going to bomb out on lake George anymore. I'd sure like to get the GPS numbers over the barge. JC
