Pet Snake?

The wife and I used to camp and fish at Ft. Cobb Lake every week during late fall through early spring. One early fall evening, we were sitting by the campfire, watching the sky for shooting stars. The wife spotted a snake in a branch of the oak tree next to us. We thought it was a strange place for a snake to be. He was still there when we went to bed.
The next day, after catching quite a few blue cats, we rowed our little aluminum rowboat to the bank (about 15' from our fire ring). As I prepared to clean the fish, that snake crawled out of the water, over the sandstone bank, to the tree, and up the trunk, to the branch, and right over the fire ring, making himself right at home.
That snake climbed up to that branch every evening every time we went there to camp. He knew right where to go, if he wanted to warm himself over our fire. We never named him, but we always looked forward to seeing our pet snake.

Lucky snake. Most folks I know would have chopped him in two on the first day. I would not have unless he was poisonous. I have let lots of non poisonous snakes go on their way safely, but lots of people have the idea of "the only good snake is a dead snake." Nice story about a smart snake. Interesting how nature works. GTT

Nice story BigSky, reminds me of a sparrow I saw at a Best Buy parking lot. The sparrow was going to the front of each car, and getting insects that had been hit by the car. Pretty smart for a bird.

I have seen that too, Redge, both sparrows and starlings. But not often.
A number of years ago, we used to fish the old Arrowhead dock (Eufaula) that burned down. The cleaning station on the bank released the crappie remains into the shallow water at the very edge of the shore. Those big old cats would swarm all over the remains, just chowing down like some of the guys eating chili at the crappie camp. I tried to catch them several times, but I think there was just too much food there for them to locate my bait.
