I grew up carrying Schrade knives. The blades were not stainless but they were fairly rust resistant and easier to put a razor edge on. I have lost all of them except one of the big Uncle Henrys with a single locking blade. It is very heavy. Now I carry a small tiny blade Case or, when fishing, a Gerber - I have two. The bigger Gerber had a paramilitary look with an open aluminum frame handle, clip and is lightweigt.

I carry a Case. I used to carry a Buck, but Buck has gotten cheap with their metal, and they don't hold an edge as good as my old case. Gerber doesn't hold a good edge, either.
I love my Gerbers. They hold a good edge for me & sharpen up as good as any stainless steel knife I ever had. However my favorites were the old regular steel knives which were far easier to sharpen. The only reason I went away from them is they didn't have lock blades at the time, and I decided I wanted one after a blade folded in on me & cut my finger to the bone. My absolute favorite knife ever though was a Browning damascus blade regular steel lockback knife that was really sharp, help an edge, was really easy to resharpen. Unfortunately I lost it, and Browning doesn't have it any more.
The choice for is a case, carried one now for years.
can't catch'em at home
My best friend dropped my puma while standing chest deep in the Verdigris. Right after, "dont drop it". I'm carring a Kershaw right know. I lost my dad's boy scout knife when I was to young to appriciate it.

Unless I'm on a plane I have a small Gerber single blade in my pocket.
I'm always looking for a vintage Russell Barlow -- has to be an old one though, not one of the new ones.

The three things I never leave home without are:
My Leatherman multitool, currently carrying the Surge model.
My flashlight, currently carrying the Surefire E2 Outdoorsman with the KL1 (1 Watt LED) conversion.
My knife. Usually I carry a small custom or commercial fixed blade. I like the fixed blade because the Leatherman has two folders built in, but sometimes I need the extra strength and security of the fixed blade. Working overseas I carry a Benchmade Model 551 w/ 154 CM blade and Griptillian handle. Of course my knife changes with whatever I am doing, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping whatever.
I recently bought one of the new Leatherman knives and I am looking forward to getting home so I can put it through the paces. But it looks really cool on the web-site!
If you have arrived here by accident, I suggest panic!
I currently carry a Cold Steel "EL LOBO" for rough duty. I've been thinking of switching back to my Case XX "folding Hunter" though.
always Keep a sharp hook.
