For trolling, you cant beat the Minn Kota Power Drive 2 with Auto Pilot. I had the 12 volt 55 lb thrust on my last boat(aluminum) and the 24 volt 70 lb thrust on my fiberglass boat now.....Love it!!!

the old trolling motor is on the blink. I am looking to replace it. What features must a trolling motor have to make a good unit for crappie fishing. I primarily fish over brush piles vertically. I am looking to get into some trolling as well.

Variable thrust is the most important feature you want.

I bought the Power Drive V2 without the autopilot, and I'm about to get another one with it.
I agree with PanMan... if you are going to start trolling you need a variable speed!!! A trolling motor with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 speeds will not let you dial your speed in as close as a variable speed motor will. Sometimes a few tenths faster or slower will make all the difference...

I am leaning to the minnkota autopilot models. It seems to be the cats meow for trolling.
You may want to take a look at the MK Terrova. The auto pilot system is a big improvement over the PD AP models of the past. Very smooth control. Upgradeable to co-pilot (remote).. I don't know how I ever got along without the co-pilot. A big plus if you're fishing with others that need assistance or you need to net a partner's fish in the back of the boat. The foot pedal on the Terrova is also different from the other PD models. It incorporates the attributes of a rocker pedal (toe tapper momentary) with that of electric steer and provides versatility and comfort for different styles of fishing..
No I don't work for or have direct ties to Minn Kota. I have ran the PD models for years. The older ones had the "herky-jerky" can't fight the wind AP that was useless. The Terrova model is the best all around trolling motor I have owned and the AP control is a huge improvement when compared to the older PD models.
Yes, VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL IS A MUST..
But at the end of the day, the most important thing is what works for YOU and your style of fishing...
