The 798c has external GPS antenna puck-- 798ci has internal gps antenna. With the external you can locate the puck in the best place for a 360 degree view of the sky. I believe this helps the GPS performance.
The internal will not work as well if loacted under a canopy or bimini top.
The advantage to the 798ci would be slightly easier install since you do not have to mount & connect the antenna.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks hotmod, I have a basstracker so it would be mounted in open space so I guess the internal would be fine. I hope the NVB comes with the 2008 maps.

Thanks for the info on the 797/798. You guys have cleared up a lot of the questions I have on them. Now all I have to do is convince the wife that I need one. I mentioned it a while back and she wasn't totally opposed. Since then, the water has cooled and I've been coming home with loads of crappie every time out, and now she asks why I need one since I catch fish just fine without it........Wives just don't get it!!! Now I'm gonna have to start getting skunked again to prove to her I can't catch fish without SI.

You just need to tell her that it is a tool to allow you to catch more crappie in your limited time on the water.:D

The one thing that I will tell you about those units is that there was a reason that the first ones that came out had a big screen. I have a 987csi that I have had for 2 years now and once you get used to the functions on it you will be definately looking at more than one function at a time (split screen) and will be flipping between the different functions to better pinpoint the exact location of fish. These things are extremely useful if you use all of the fuctions and don't get too caught up in the SI and forget how you used to fish. At times I wish that I had a larger screen when I am looking at a split screen of the 2D depth finder and the side scan so that I can see more detail. When you mark fish on the 2D side you can look at your side scan to see what side the fish is on and approximately how far away from the boat it actually is. This is just my 2 cents worth; if you can afford the larger control head you will not regret it in the long run.
I also saw on another post that the transducer that comes with the 700 series is smaller than the 900 series, but if you install the 900 series transducer it will work much better. The 900 series transducer is about the sized of a dollar bill and is about 3 lbs where the 700 is smaller. That is just what I read from someone on here that had first hand experience and is now using the 900 series transducer on his 700 series control head.

wish I had 2 slots in my 797.. I love the unit...I am still amazed at detail of the si. creeks, ditches, humps, points, rocks, stumps, trees, on and on
If i had the 3000 bucks I'd grab the TOL model the screen size would be nice..

I also have the the 797. Wish I had the extra 1000 bucks to get the bigger one that has better res and more pixels. I'm not at all impressed with my unit. It is so hard for me to make things out on the screen
