Ya don't hate it enough to remove it from your boat though do ya?
That speaks volumes.

I must be using my 997 wrong. It takes me at most 2 passes to get close enough using the GPS that I can see the object I'm trying to locate on the 2D SONAR. Of course, I just slow down to about 1 mph and use the display to pass over my target. I don't use the "navigate to" feature.
It is far easier for me to find a previously marked brush pile with my 997 than it is with my LCX-27C. There have been times where I have given up on the 27C and switched to the 997 to find what I'm looking for.
Has anyone tried turning off the SONAR function completely to see if GPS update rate improves. If the processor is saturated with both GPS and SONAR calculations, about the only way to get significant improvement in GPS function through a firmware change is to sacrifice SONAR performance. I'm really not in favor of that.

Got mine for entertainment.* I sure don't need it for fishing. I bought 997 knowing it had gps issues (had 797), BUT I was assured by the HB rep that this issue would be resolved.* When I called about the fix, well haha.....My* 997 sonar is turned off.* I use a console flasher.* All excess features off or hidden to help GPS.* This don't help much.* I want to use the trolling grid feature to help me locate civill war artifacts, but until the gps is more refined, the trolling grid is basically worthless.* HB advertises the SI as the ultimate structure finding tool.* Maybe.* Lets just say it can find structure's home, but it don't know the structures address.Fortunatly, I can "get around" all the shortcomings of the gps, but it is a PIA. Pete, they didn't fix it......![]()

Lowrance GPS is so accurate for me I can go without the sonar
I don't use the "navigate to" feature either. I have however not been impressed with the accuracy "at times" in finding way points. At times I can easily find my way point then other times I end up 50' off. What confuses me is that to test the system I made a way point where I park my boat along the shore while I go get my trailer. I have since found that every time I return to that point my gps is dead nuts on. I have resorted to using my 997 to get in the general area and then my Garmin handheld to get right on the structure.

Went fishing today. Just to prove a point to myself I never used sonar-just found my waypoints with Lowrance GPS. Caught 19 keepers.
Used my Hummingbird 797 for the second time yesterday. Let me say this very clear. I bought this unit for the side imaging with GPS. The GPS is truly a joke. I have used a Garmin 378 that has a great GPS guidance system that has settings to make sure your on track to your spot. The Hummingbird system is such a joke. Anyone that says it will guide right to your spot then please tell me how you are using it. It's one one those purchases that I am very disappointed in. I really can't believe they call it a GPS system.
Soak em if you got em
