Cane Pole, if you really think you can make this unit, I will order another foot pedal and send you my old one. I have already spoken to a supplier and the new unit will cost me 150. If anyone knows where I can get a used one please pm me. I need this unit!!!:D

    Hold you taters now.

This conversion has a high possibility rate. However, I need to see the whole picture first. I need to look at a complete unit so as to clearly understand the functions of the foot pedal.

My understanding is that the unit uses 4 wires. More than likely, this would be power, ground, transmit, receive. This means that the foot control is probably a pic micro controller of some type. Also, it is my understanding that the control circuitry is molded. This makes the controller hard to duplicate. So, the easiest path to success would be to repackage the foot controller. Ok.

Marine electronics is not leading edge technology (as some manufacturers would lead us to believe).

Based on my limited knowledge of the unit, I would need to see one and partially disassemble it. Disassembling the foot control should not damage nor render the unit unserviceable.

What if I take it apart and take pictures for you to review? Would this help?

Jabbo and I took one apart yesterday and it is just as you described it Cane Pole. Although it may not be impossible to make a wired hand remote for a Terrova, it probably is not practical,IMO....If I had a Terrova, I think I would just order the Co-Pilot for it. For the money, I think that would be best.

I have a copilot---the problem is that the speed increments using the copilot are too wide, so you have to use the foot control for speed.

Kinda what I thought from previous discussions here. Did JABBO consider repackaging the controls? Like I said, it is hard for me to organize my thoughts without seeing what I need to organize..

Based on TnTs observation, the only practical thing to do would be repackage the controls. Go ahead and take some pictures. It would give me a better understanding of the "unknown"......

Nothing is impossible, but some things can be impractical. Keep this in mind.

I guess we could repack the molded part but the problem is gonna be getting all the switches back where they are supposed to go. On the end of each switch lever it looks like a magnet(to me) that is being pulled away from the molded part when the switch is pressed(alittle wierd). So without duplicating this exactly one would have to "dig out" the mold and see whats inside. And then still might not be able to duplicate practically as TnT stated!!! :D

The contacts for the mechanical operation on the foot pedal actually work when the connection between the mechanical connection(i.e. left/right steering) is broken from the module. I suspect there is some sort of magnetic theory happening there which is getting way over my head. Repackaging the module might be an option, but to make the mechanical connection,IMO,would require quite a bit of fabrication work. I gave the pedal to Jabbo yesterday, so maybe he can take some pics and post them if Jeepster is not able to...I'll ask Jabbo.

I have seen 2 magnets on opposite sides of a pc board used to slide over a bubble and make a contact and also use magnets of a slide switch made from coated carbon strips. This technique makes for good waterproofing.

This is probable what the magnets are about.
