    Watching the depth of the downrigger ball is a key part of offshore trolling. I would think the same thing could be useful in fresh water too.

    The only thing is, blowback will push a light jig out of the transducer viewing cone whereas a heavy downrigger ball stays pretty close to 'under the boat' at most normal speeds. At least 'under the boat' enough to stay in the sonar cone.

    Back in Town for a while.

    Wannabe is right. Adjust your sensitivity and noise rejection/clutter settings. I know on the 2D you can change your beam select from 200khz to 200khz/83khz. This will give you Dual Beal sonar. This is a wider beam so you can see your jig.
