I don't know anything about these motors, per se, but I assumed that they used a five position speed potentiometer(speed coil?) for particular speed settings. I know that they would lose some energy to heat and the addition of resistance thereof. I suppose that the newer technology of modulation reduces the on-time, thus reducing the heat build up. Interesting topic.

i killed my old half dead spare battery last weekend so i went to the starting battery which is about 6 months old and fully charged to troll. its just a car battery from walmart. main motor has pull rope and electric start so if i killed the battery it wouldnt be a big deal. anyways i trolled for probably 3 hours or more saturday, mostly on #2-#1. used it sunday too for another 2-3 hours before it seemed to not have as much kick but was still working fine, when i went to leave i still had just enough juice to get the gas motor to kick over.
im using a MK endura 50.
