    Default Side imaging

I went to Gander Mountain to gain some knowledge about the Humminbird Side Imaging feature. The salesman there told me that the feature is only useful to Salmon/Walleye anglers who troll. He told me that its useless if I’m not planning to troll and that it only works at the speed of 4 mph.

    Is that true?

    I'd rather be fishing!

I don't have one but if you do much reading here I do believe you will rapidly find out that the salesman doesn't know squat.

sideimagineing does work best when you have forward motion! That does not mean that you need to be moving 4mph!
The biggest plus to sideimage in my opinion is it makes it easer and faster to find fish and or structure. after you have found it. you realy dont need it, till you need to find it or some other again!

He is about as full of it as the Salesman at BPS Memphis.

I did this through the ice to find a submerged fish house for a couple guys. The bucket is how I rigged it to rotate the transducer under the ice.

and this page you can check out different speeds in the lower left

All my boat can do is 13mph but I still get a usable screens at that speed.

Im intrigued by these units...I guess you have to train yourself...but if i saw this I would not have a clue what it was showing me...it looks like a giant nail stuck in the mud. How do you interpret it? Now I do see the boat plainly on the other link.

I was told by Crappieday that it works best from 2-5mph.

That salesman doesn't know squat. He should be fired. I love my 997 and find new stuff everytime I go out. It does take a little time to learn to interpet what you see but so did flashers and graphs.

    Just my opinion.

By the way Carp, the nail is the shadow cast by the bait house, the bait house is the little white spot at the base of the nail. Not hard to interpet once you get used to it.

I found the clearest images seem to be a screen scroll speed value equal to your boat speed. If you have problems understanding the screen captures there is a trick that might help. Try turning your head so the water column looks like the horizon. Just don't do it too long, I got the dangdest sore neck when I first started out.
