I resisted color for a while, thinking it was a gimmick. Then I saw a Lowrance 520 on the water. I have one now and love it. Colors can tell you fish size or even species.

The colors can tell you the species? Haven't heard that one. You mean you can tell the difference between a bass and a crappie? That is better than sidecan.

You can't always tell, but the amount of yellow in the arch related to the size of the fish is a pretty good indicator.

Crappie usually show as a tighter arch and bass and like fish make a flatter arch. I'm not sure what the color shows.
