How does the side imaging pick up pvc and others don't pick it up?

I fish, therefore I am
Not sure about the Hbird, but a towfish sidescan is about frequency, the transducer array and spacing of the transducers and the narrow cone angle. You can see a frog hair with the tow fish sidescan.
Similar principals I would expect.

The side imager works more like an ultra sound than a traditional LCR! The returns are alot stronger.
Actually most any unit will pickup PVC if adjusted properly.
Good fishing.
I agree. I'd only add that being able to know that it's pvc on a normal unit is a lot harder then what I'd imagine it to be on an SI unit.Originally Posted by ERNEST PATY

Ernest, quick question: I've only done some sample recordings from simulator mode, I converted them using the HBSI sonar file converter and I've looked at them in both programs (yellowfin and Deepview) and I like the results. I'm assuming that the results will be limited by the pre-recorded file that HB put on the unit, and what does the ping speed really do in real-life recordings. So do you set the ping speed to a certain setting, or let it run on Auto?
That is the only question I have, without actually getting the unit out on the water. I've spent a couple hours sitting in my garage looking at all the menus and settings trying to get an idea of what I'm dealing with.
Sorry to overload you with info, or hijack this thread. Thanks in advance.
Good questions, I want to know all that I can about the 797 because I will soon be buying one.
