Where the difference between down imaging and structure scan. I have a lowrance hds5 and was wondering if its really worth the extra money to have the structure scan and was wondering what the difference was between di and structure scan. And also if i decided I wanted the structure scan what do I need to get that function. And an est cost

Down imagining is just that feature. Structure scan has both down and side in the same unit. When you buy structure scan you get the transducer and module that connects to your HDS unit so you have either or. I have a new structure scan unit for sale in the classified section on the main forum. They sell for around $600.00 new.

Maybe a dumb question but why is structurescan not built into the Lowrance units to start with like the Humminbird SI units? Doesn't structurescan and side imaging do the same thing just different names?

Just how the chose to do it the first couple of times around. Good thing was you could buy the base unit then as you could afford it add the structure scan. All the newer Lowrance touch units have it built in all you have to do is add the Structure scan transducer. With Humminbird there is no upgrade ability.

Thanks Cray that makes a lot of sense. Being able to upgrade without having to buy the whole unit.

It may have had something to do with who came out with it first. Hummingbird offered it first and Lowrance came out with it later. I was trying to think of patent rights.

Another advantage is the way Lowrance units can be linked to each other. I have 3 units on my boat, one at the bow and two at the console. I can have a lot of options of what I can view on each unit without each unit needing the redundant circuitry.

In my experience a 5" screen is too small to see Side imaging clearly.
