Thread: 999 settings

I would recommend going on Youtube and looking under the heading Humminbird 999 for videos. Doug Vahrenberg has an entire series of short instructional vides on the Humminbird 998,999 and 1199. They are listed under the heading "Tips and Tricks" and numbered so they are easily identified. I found "Tips and Tricks 5: Start Up Tips" to be especially helpful for me initially setting up my new 999.

I have owned several HB with side imaging, I think the only thing that you will need to adjust is sensitivity. If the image seems to dark, up the sensitivity. If it seems to light turn the sensitivity down. Match chart speed to boat speed (usually 3or 4) my boat idles at 4mph. I very seldom if ever mess with the contrast, hb seems to have it dialed in so little adjustment is needed in MYHO.
If I was a betting man I would bet that you turn it on and are amazed, probably won't even have to adjust anything.

What I learned to do from the guys here: Go to the depth you will fish and go over a piece of cover....brush, tree, etc. Make sure you are going a little over 3mph for SI. When you get that pic centered up on your screen, hit your 4-way button to activate the cursor and (more importantly) freeze the screen. Now with the screen frozen you can just turn off the boat and hit the menu button and start adjusting to get the pic where you want it. Experiment with different color pallettes, contrast, sharpness, SI enhance, etc.

I'm mounting the ducer off the front and will be running my triller while I'm watching the screen

Doesn't matter if you are on the TM or the outboard, but they say the best pics are taken between 3 and 6 mph, and going as straight as you can.

I keep the "SI Enhance" window up on my screen anytime I am viewing SI...

This gives the abilitiy to change the "SI Sensitivity" setting without (opaquing out) any other split view that I have up at the time...

I use the SI Sensitivity setting as a "brightness" control for my SI image (as different water conditions/bottom compositions will make the image brighter/darker..)

SI Sensitivity up will brighten the image...
SI Sensitivity down will darken the image...

I frequently change this SI Sensitivity setting as my SI image changes in brightness...

Here is a screenshot of the "SI Enhance" window overlayed onto the SI image... I had to adjust the sensitivity to 19 to get this mud bottom to reflect enough sonar echo to get an acceptable image ...

Keeping the enhance menu open is a good ideal, like rickety said.I also think , running on 455 kHz would be best for locating blue gill beds.there's really not all that much to the settings.as long as the bottom hardness/softness stays fairly constant, not much need to adjust. (Blue gill beds will show up real good) and also the blue gills, that are sitting in the holes
