I'm pretty sure these don't work out of the water....at least mine don't, so any reading you get in the garage would be false, right?

They should still "work" ... they just wouldn't pick up any return signal. So, if the line is still there when the tdx is out of the water, it's an issue inside the head unit. IMHO
