The 688 is a current model, the 788 is the old model.

If the 788 is the HD version it can be networked and also has 2 card slots instead of the the one slot in the 688.

The current 859 model would be closer to the old 788.

We would have to know which exact models of 688 & 788 HB's you're referring to .... but, overall there seems to be the biggest difference in cost, pixel count, number of card slots, and transducer frequencies in these two units :

    788ci Combo only has 83/200kHz transducer (2d broadband sonar) ... 640x640 pixel spread ... dual card slots ... MSRP @ $650

688ci HD DI Combo has 200/455/800kHz transducer (2d and Down Image sonar) ... 640x480 pixel spread ... single card slot ... MSRP @ $500

    ... cp
